Getting Started

If you've heard about Children's TherAplay or looked around our website, you may have a few questions about our clinic. The information below will help answer them and also, when you're ready, begin the patient referral process.

How do I know if Children's TherAplay is a good fit for my child?

As an outpatient rehabilitation clinic for children with special needs, there are some parameters to the program that help define who is appropriate for therapy services at our clinic. Provided below is basic information that will help you determine if your child and Children's TherAplay's program would be a good fit. As always, please feel free to contact us if you have further questions.

Hippotherapy or therapeutic riding?

Here at Children's TherAplay we incorporate hippotherapy as a tool into our pediatric occupational and physical therapy sessions. We do not offer therapeutic or adaptive riding. What's the difference between hippotherapy and therapeutic riding?

Our clinic serves children with a wide variety of diagnoses. Any child who is in need of physical and/or occupational therapy may be appropriate to receive therapy at Children's TherAplay.

Age and weight ranges

Children's TherAplay treats children between the ages of 18 months (two years for kiddos with Down syndrome, due to atlantoaxial instability) and 13 years with a maximum weight of approximately 80 - 100 lbs. If your child cannot sit independently and requires assistance, the maximum weight is approximately 40-45 lbs.

Physician's referral

Each patient must have a physician's referral (prescription) for occupational and/or physical therapy.  The prescription should include: “Occupational and/or Physical Therapy Evaluate and Treat” and include the child’s pertinent diagnoses and ICD-10 codes. The prescription should not say "equine therapy" or "hippotherapy" as the movement of the horse is just one of the tools we utilize in pediatric occupational and physical therapy.

Frequency of treatment

Since treatment is highly individualized, the frequency of each child’s treatment at Children's TherAplay depends upon the therapist’s findings and recommendations during the initial evaluation as well as the number of visits permitted, per benefit period, by your commercial carrier. Children may come once per week, twice per week, or twice per month depending upon those recommendations.

Insurance information

Children's TherAplay is an in-network provider with Anthem, UnitedHealthcare, Cigna, Indiana Medicaid, and Children’s Special Healthcare Services. Each insurance plan can vary, so be sure to contact your insurance carrier to see what benefits your plan provides for outpatient physical and/or occupational therapy.

If your insurance benefits have been maximized, there are options for self-pay and Children's TherAplay's scholarship program

How do I refer my child for therapy at Children's TherAplay?

  1. Begin by filling out a new patient form and returning it to Children's TherAplay. You may mail it to 9919 Towne Rd, Carmel, IN 46032; email it to; or fax it to (317) 872-3234.

There is often a waiting list for both physical and occupational therapy; therefore, you may want to send in the form months before your child is ready to get started.

However, the more flexible you can be with scheduling your child's standing appointment, the more quickly we can begin your child's treatment.
  2. Once we receive the completed form, our Billing Manager will check your insurance for benefits and eligibility.
  3. A therapist will call to schedule an evaluation for your child.

Meet Catalina

“[Children's TherAplay is] the best thing that we could probably do for Catalina right now. … She doesn’t even know she’s going for therapy. For her it’s a play time. Every time I see her in therapy, she’s just cracking up.”
